Full course description

The Higher Education Opportunity Act of 2008 had provisions for increased access to higher postsecondary education for students with intellectual disabilities (ID). For a variety of reasons, many young adults with ID want to go to college. To encourage students with ID who want to go to college in North Dakota, teachers need to help students and their families have high expectations and be aware of the available options. It is also important for teachers to understand how the transition IEP can be used to prepare young adults with ID to be ready for college and successful in postsecondary education. Additionally, it is crucial to promote collaborative efforts between educators and families to create school communities that positively impact students’ well-being. This training session will describe these components and also provide an overview of resources that teachers can use to support transition-age students with disabilities as they prepare for adulthood.
