Full course description

Welcome!

Are you ready to fill your toolbox when it comes to work with multilingual learners from a variety of backgrounds? This 1-credit, asynchronous course is designed to help educators from different contexts better meet the needs of the multilingual learners in their setting.   Participants will learn foundational knowledge around culturally responsive teaching, leveraging student assets, linguistics, second-language acquisition, and the WIDA framework for English language development. Participants will learn to look at the academic language of their content at the word, sentence, and discourse levels so that they can make it more accessible for multilingual learners.  They will explore a range of teaching and assessment strategies to help unlock students' understanding as they learn English as an additional language. Many of the assignments are application tasks that will provide the participant with real-life practice and tools that they can use in their current teaching context.

Course Instructor: Dakota Breen--EL teacher at West Fargo High School since 2011 and District EL Support for West Fargo Public Schools since 2022.
