Full course description
Welcome!
Hello! Welcome to Examining Young Adult Literature with SEL in mind. In this class you will read 3 books, complete reading quizzes and join online discussions to reflect on how these novels apply to you and your classroom. The actual coursework is minimal preferring to have the majority of course hours spent reading the texts. I hope you find these books to be enjoyable reads. This is a one-credit course (15 CEUs, one credit through VCSU).
A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness is a middle-grade fiction with beautiful illustrations.
Turtles all the Way Down by John Green is a YA novel with the main character working through an OCD diagnosis all the while solving a mystery.
Chaos Theory , the final novel, is by Nic Stone. In this story the character struggles with her own mental health, while at the same time she also helps another struggling student.
John Green and Nic Stone are some of my favorite YA authors. I hope you will enjoy these books for the sheer enjoyment of reading as well as the connections to SEL, your classroom, and perhaps yourself.
If you find yourself loving these texts, Art of Insanity by Christine Webb is optional read that is a similar style of YA book you may enjoy.
